I found this very, very interesting.
According to Dave Gallagher, the business editor at The Bellington Herald in Bellington, WA there is a scam going around that preys on businesses who desire recognition.
The scam - called "Vanity Awards" - typically starts with an email note to a business saying they have been chosen as "The Best (fill in blank.) The business is then directed to a web site where they can order their plaque to commemorate that honor.
I find it interesting that the desire for recognition is so strong (both for individuals and businesses) it is driving criminal activity. Criminals typically don't like to participate in anything unless it's easy and a sure thing.
Promising recognition obviously meets both their criteria.
