From the front page of USA Today on January 19, 2006 was a graphic that showed the percentage of children who were praised by their parents at least three times per day. Children under 6 were praised at least three times a day 72% of the time - those between 12-17 - only 37% received the same.
I'm guessing that if you extrapolate that into the work environment the number may actually be 0% (boss being the substitute for parent.) I'm not suggesting we praise for no reason - but we should look for more opportunities either formally through a peer-to-peer program in the office or informally with lunch and coffee break invitation.
