The statistics from this article on employee engagement are rather impressive. Tom's question is a good one. Why don't business leaders understand that an engaged workforce is a better workforce?
My personal opinion is that they do get it but fixing it is something they don't know how to do. No one is bringing them any substantial ideas that DEMONSTRATE success. My own industry spends a lot of time talking about the process and the programs and the awards and recognition but I don't see many RESULTS being discussed.
Part of the program is that we don't want to see the results because we would have to be accountable. The other have of the problem is that the people buying the program would also be responsible. Lord knows we don't want to be responsible for something.
The other thing is that engaged employees require engaged management. Most CEOs want to point to someone and say "fix it" and then walk away feeling like they fixed the problem. The reality is they are the problem.
